(some of these posts are kind of mixed up, but you get the idea)
today we went snorkeling for our first time. i was already sunburned on my back, so i wore shorts and a t-shirt over my bathing suit. it wasn't until after we got back that i realized i could've skipped the bathing suit all together, seeing as how i was fully covered anyways. we ate an early breakfast and headed out around 8\;30. i was admittedly nervous, to the extent that my professor and his wife assumed i'd never gone snorkeling before, so they were a bit confused when i told them i was a good swimmer and relatively experienced snorkeler. the boat ride out to the reef was at least half an hour, which gave me the perfect amount of time to become even more nervous (about, you know, sea monsters and drowning and the lot). But, as soon as i got in the water and immediately spotted our first stingray, followed by sea stars and pipe fish, i forgot my anxiety and had a great time. evidently, water is vastly less frightening when it contains interesting things to look at. a list of things i saw\; sea cucumbers, two octopi, many types of sea stars, jelly fish, parrot fish, lion fish, pipe fish, snapper, grouper, butterfly fish, sea anemone, trumpet fish, and piles upon piles of interesting types of coral-- some that looked like bright green brains, others that consisted of thousands of smaller anemone-like organisms. my back didn't get any more sunburned,m but the backs of my legs now have a nice pink (or bright red, if you will) tint to them.
