i am in the echinoderm quadrad research group, meaning that, along with two other people (elly and lisa), i will be randomly tossing a 1 m x 1m pvc pipe square into the water, and then counting how many sea stars, urchins, sea cucumbers, and sand dollars there are in that area. we will repeat this over and over again in an attempt to achieve a random sampling of the average numbers of each of those on the reef. the other groups are\: benthic (sea floor) communities, giant clams, lobsters & octopus, butterfly fish, and grouper & snapper.
i very much enjoy seeing all this sea life (did i mention that i caught a baby puffer fish in a coconut shell a couple days ago?) and reading about it. however, i know myself well enough to realize that this is because this whole field is so new, not because i should have been a biology major.
